Learn More About Good Work Guidance

The following exercise is designed to help you in at least three ways. First, it will help you evaluate how ready you are to embark on the path to meaningful work. Second, it will give you a simple road map for your journey, by laying out some of the major landmarks along the way. Third, it will give you practice at hearing and repeating simple affirmations that can strengthen your resolve and create a sensory-rich image of your own progress.

Instructions: If you have just completed Exercise 2, it is a good idea to pause for a moment now before proceeding to this next exercise. Take a few deep breaths and quiet your mind. Listen for a moment to the beating of your heart. Then begin.

Print this exercise out before you begin. Read each statement below and place a check mark in the box that most closely agrees with how you feel right now. Look back at this exercise again later in The Path to Meaningful Work to see if your feelings have changed or become stronger.

1. I have come to realize that I want my work to have more meaning.

2. I believe IT IS POSSIBLE for me to find greater meaning in my work.

3. I am willing to make a contract with myself to follow through on the steps to finding meaningful work.

4. Intuition and rational thinking will both play a role in my planning and decision making as I seek greater meaning in my work .

5. When I am relaxed and awake to the present moment, I am more likely to have insights about what I want and how to get it.

6. When I know where I stand, I'm better prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves to me. As a first step toward more meaningful work, I am prepared to do a thorough inventory of my present circumstances, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses, assets and liabilities.

8. Work that takes my personal values into account is work that is likely to have greater meaning to me.

9. Being really clear about what I value will help bring me closer to meaningful work.

10. If I feel confident and strong, I will move more quickly on the path to meaningful work.

11. It will be easier for me to find meaningful work if the people in my life give me encouragement.

12. People with clear goals are more likely to find meaning in their work.

13. Any big challenge goes more smoothly when you can break it down into small steps.

Scoring Key: Give yourself the following points. Fill in the blanks with the points earned by each of your answers. Then add up each of the columns. Finally add up the column totals to get your score.
